This one day course is geared for the first responding patrol/ supervisor/ dispatchers who find themselves in the position of first contact with a despondent individual who has either threatened harm to themselves or has taken hostage(s) and has threatened to do harm to others. The initial first contact with a barricaded suspect or active shooter is critical to a successful outcome. Understanding best practices for crisis negotiations at the first level of contact will help the responding officers stabilize or resolve the crisis before a trained specialized hostage negotiator arrives on scene. This training is not intended to replace the response of a properly trained hostage/crisis negotiator, but rather provide best practices for officers responding prior to the hostage negotiators and tactical response teams arrival on scene.

The course will include classroom lecture, video/audio presentation, case study, group work and role play if time permits
